Connecticut teacher takes to Facebook for kidney

GROTON

Brad Vernet teaches seventh grade at West Middle School in Groton.

He was born with one kidney, and in 1990, routine blood tests revealed problems with it.

Now, he recently learned he has stage five kidney disease.

He needs a new organ within two years to survive.

"My function right now, I'm at like 14 percent kidney function," he said.

At 10 percent, he would need dialysis which he is hoping to avoid.

"It's a constant cycle of toxins building up in your blood, and then you have it filtered," he said. "And then it builds up again."

Vernet posted his story on Facebook, hoping to find a donor.

If you're interested in donating your kidney, you'll have to first contact Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston to begin the testing process. That's where Brad is being treated.
