No one from 28 year old Shareef Holder's family came to court on Monday, nor did the family of the man killed after police say Holder's white Mercedes SUV slammed into three cars stopped at a traffic light on Saturday night.
Luis Rodriguez, 22, of Franklin Township died at the scene along Jersey Avenue near Huron Road, where friends and family placed flowers and candles.
"Oh man, he had a lot of dreams. I want to cry," Avi Membreno, a friend, said.
Investigators say holder had had an accident in New Brunswick earlier, but left the scene. Minutes later, an officer pulled him over when he saw the damage. The officer told holder to stay in his SUV.
"As the officer was running his plate, he left at a high rate of speed," assistant prosecutor Sheree Pitchford said.
No chase, but minutes later police came upon 3 cars hit by the speeding car. Rodriguez's Honda was barely recognizable. He'd had something big to live for.
"I feel sorry for his girlfriend. She is pregnant with twins. I don't know what to say about that," Membreno said.
Holder is charged with manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and eluding police. Based on his past record, his bail was set at one million dollars.
