What really happened?

Bill Ritter's daily take on the news.

What's the old saw about it's not the crime, it's the cover up that will get you? Is a cover up about to "get" an undercover New York cop, for possibly not telling the truth at that biker mob attack on the West Side Highway last week?

Video reportedly shows the undercover cop - who said he was afraid to stop the violence because he didn't want to blow his cover - actually smashing the SUV with the family inside. The family was harassed and the dad was beaten.

Were there other off-duty cops in that mob? The NYPD is now investigating that possibility. And if there were cops in that biker crowd, then why didn't they stop the violence? Were they able to stop the violence? The undercover officer's lack of candor, if proven true, could throw a huge wet blanket over the credibility of off-duties who may have been there.

We'll have the latest on the SUV biker mob attack, tonight at 11.

Also at 11, shutdown day 8 sends stocks down again, as the stalemate in Washington continues. And while so many people are furloughed, thanks heaven Congress members can still use their exclusive gym! The work-out area was supposed to be shutdown along with other "non-essential" parts of Washington. But ABC News has learned that the gym - known as the Members' Wellness Center - is open, thank you very much, complete with flat-screen TVs, workout machines, and even a heated swimming pool. Charming.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast, and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.
