A 43-year old man was walking on Meachman Avenue around 3 a.m. Sunday when the attacker began asking for money.
Police say the suspect, 46-year old James Howley, got angry when the victim didn't give him enough money and repeatedly stabbed and slashed his face, neck, chest and hands.
The victim found a pipe on the ground and struck Howley, who then fled on Hempstead Turnpike.
The victim was taken to an area hospital, and when he saw that his attacker had also gone to the hospital for treatment, pointed him out to police.
Howley was taken into custody and is charged with assault, robbery, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief.
A subsequent investigation by detectives revealed that after fleeing the incident with the victim, Howley had thrown a brick through the store front glass window at a Franklin Square gas station.
