Lower East Side supermarket owner beaten with skateboard

NEW YORK

The incident happened just after 5:30 p.m. at the Eastern Supermarket on Grand Street.

Authorities say the four suspects entered the store, removed merchandise and attempted to exit without paying.

The 50-year-old victim tried to stop them from shoplifting when he was struck in the face with a skateboard.

He was treated and subsequently released from New York Downtown Hospital.
