Local churches raise money for Philippines typhoon victims

FLUSHING

On Sunday, St. Michael's Church in Flushing took up a special collection for the Philippines.

Divina Pasion's relatives and friends survived the typhoon in the Philippines, but she still feels the pain for the many others who did not stand a chance against the powerful, devastating winds.

Many Catholic churches throughout the Tri-State area took up a second collection for disaster relief on Sunday for basics like water and medicine. From St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue to Asian communities in Flushing, the church was calling on the generosity of believers to help others who were suffering.

Eyewitness News is told the money that is collected will go to relief agencies on the ground. For those who don't have extra funds to give, churches are also asking for prayers.
