Two lanes of the inbound upper deck were shut down Monday afternoon because a deteriorated piece of roadway withered further as it was readied for replacement, leaving a 5-foot hole in an expansion joint. That quickly created a traffic nightmare.
A third lane was closed overnight due to normal bridge repairs.
One lower level lane was also shut down, but it was still the better way to go.
Emergency crews worked overnight to repair the bridge, which was fully reopened around 4:30 a.m.
At its worst, there were 90 minute delays at 6 p.m. Monday compared to 30 minute delays at the Holland and Lincoln tunnels.
