The derailment occured as the train was backing into a facility at 1 a.m. Thursday near Exit 12 of the New Jersey Turnpike when it hit a large abutment. One car of the train flipped, and another car is partially flipped and is on its side.
Officials had the ramps at Interchange 12 on the New Jersey Turnpike as a precaution while crews try to upright the tankers. Chief Mark Hruska of the Carteret Fire Department says there is no leak and no danger to the public, but the train was carrying a noxious flammable material.
There is no word yet on what caused the freight train to derail.
