Funeral for one of victims of Metro-North derailment

NEW YORK

Her funeral is being held at Saint Sebastian Roman Catholic Church in Woodside, Queens.

The Korean immigrant, a registered nurse, was returning home after her overnight shift at the Sunshine Children's Home and Rehab Center in Ossining.

Her brother says he saw his little sister off to live the American Dream, and then, this past Sunday, half a world away, Ahn Jin Won turned on his computer and on the internet, and he learned her fate.

"I never thought my sister would die this way. I didn't know. I didn't know. I didn't think," said Ahn Jin Won, the victim's brother.

His sister wanted to come to New York from South Korea to hone her craft.

But she lost her life along with three other commuters on Thanksgiving weekend, when a Grand Central bound Metro-North train flew off the tracks at Spuyten Duyvil.

Sources say engineer William Rockefeller admits he simply spaced out at the worst possible time as his train barreled around a curve at nearly triple the speed limit.

"I'm really angry because it was human error," Ahn Jin Won said.

Federal regulators agreed, and issued an Emergency Order demanding immediate safety improvements on Metro-North. They include, automatic warnings to prevent trains from going too fast, a second engineer at the controls, and by the end of the year, a comprehensive "action plan" to improve safety in the long run.

And Friday night, the MTA responded to the feds, with a letter of its own.

"Please be assured," Chairman Tom Prendergast wrote, "That we too recognize the gravity of this incident and are committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure nothing like this ever happens again."
