But more and more couples, especially in New York, are forgetting about the cold and snow and focusing on the beauty of a winter wedding.
New York Magazine has a special issue for those thinking of tying the knot in winter.
"It's sort of an obsessive guide to everything you could possibly ever want to know about getting married this time of year<" said the magazine's Jessica Silvester.
She says you must first think of the most obvious thing.
"You obviously want to stay warm this time of year, when going from a car to the isle but you also want to look really beautiful," Silvester said.
Your guests will do a double take when they see you in an ivory coat with contrasting metallic sleeves or a more traditional rhinestone encrusted shrug.
For the topper that keeps on giving, the magazine displays an eye-catching iridescent piece.
"It's amazing, you can wear that with jeans that will look awesome again and again and again," said Silvester.
As will accessories for your hair. For drama, try sparkly bobby pins.
"One or two looks pretty but when you wear multiples, it really creates more of an impact," said Silvester.
As will a monochromatic bouquet filled with feathers and pearls, or a cake with winter lights.
