Call them tough, or just plain crazy, but dozens of swimmers welcomed in the new year with an icy dip in the Atlantic Ocean.

Members of the 'Ice Breakers' swim club took the plunge at Brighton Beach, Brooklyn.

The water temperature: a teeth-chattering 41 degrees.

The Ice Breakers boast of having the largest amount of active swimmers over 70 years of age (10 swimmers). and have four members over 80 years of age and one over 90

And a few miles west, the Coney Island Polar Bears club was getting chilled for a good cause.

The swimmers were raising funds to send children with life threatening illnesses and their families to a special summer camp in Maine, and to raise awareness about the Bone Marrow Donation Registry.
