Several 911 calls were made at around 7 p.m. with residents complaining of a strong odor of gas around Route 4 and East 54th Street.
PSE & G says the leak came from a high-powered natural gas main.
The utility says no one was in danger, and no homes or businesses were evacuated.
Route 4 is also known as Broadway. The portion between the Paterson bridge to the Fair Lawn border was affected.
