Operation 7 Save A Life

Bill Ritter's daily take on the news.

Of all the great things I get to do as an anchor at Eyewitness News, one of the best is giving voice to our annual Operation 7 Save A Life campaign. Together with our corporate and public agency partners, we pass out tens of thousands of Kidde smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to people who otherwise couldn't afford them.

This is our 16th annual campaign, and we've distributed more than 650,000 detectors. We have, indeed, saved lives.

Our award-winning special airs tomorrow night at 7 p.m. on WABC TV, Ch. 7.

It's a half hour well-worth watching, in my humble opinion.

As for tonight at 11, we'll have all the breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's frigid (still) and snowy weekend AccuWeather forecast, and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa, tonight at 11, right after 20/20.

And a note about tonight's 20/20 ? it marks the return of Elizabeth Vargas, who has been battling alcoholism. Her revealing and candid interview with George Stephanopoulos aired this morning on GMA. She has taken the first step in the fight - admitting the problem and getting help. We welcome her return to the anchor desk of 20/20. And of course we wish her success and offer support.
