Winter storm adds to New York City blood shortages

NEW YORK

The New York Blood Center says dozens of blood drives have been canceled because of winter storms.

Fewer people are showing up at blood drives that are still being held.

Of the eight major blood types, five are below target levels.

About one in seven hospital admissions requires a blood transfusion. In addition to trauma victims, blood is especially important for people with leukemia and other forms of cancer.

The center provides blood, transfusion products and services to hospitals around New York City, Long Island, New York's Hudson Valley, New Jersey, and parts of Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
