Chelsea shooting leaves 2 wounded in ankles

NEW YORK

The victims, a 34-year-old man who was involved in a dispute and a 24-year-old bystander, were shot outside a building on West 24th Street in Chelsea just after 6:30 a.m. They were being treated at Bellevue Medical Center for non life-threatening injuries.

The shooting appeared to begin as a dispute inside an after-hours social club that spilled onto the street. Police say a suspect hit the victim with a metal pipe before another shot him.

The suspects, a group of men, fled the scene.

No arrests were immediately made, but police closed West 24th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues for the investigation.

The shooting was blocks from another police investigation, in the Sixth Avenue L subway station at Sixth Avenue and West 14th Street.

A man, possibly homeless, was discovered dead at 3:20 a.m. The cause of death is pending an autopsy by the Medical Examiner, but the victim did not appear to sustain trauma.
