New York's Indian Point nuclear power plant tested its siren system Wednesday in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Orange counties.

The facility's 172 sirens sounded at full volume for about four minutes between 10:30 and 11 a.m.

No response by the public was required.

In an actual emergency, the sirens would sound to alert the public to tune in to a local Emergency Alert System radio or television station for information and directions.

These stations are listed in the emergency planning booklet mailed to households and businesses in the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone around Indian Point.
