Wrestlers punished

February 20, 2014

The great writer William Golding was on to something in Lord of the Flies with young guys, and their collective bad behavior far greater than the sum of their individual parts.

I'm thinking about Lord of the Flies tonight as we report the despicable picture of some high school wrestlers in New Jersey, posing with a wrestling dummy, who has a noose around his neck. Did I mention that the wrestlers are white and the dummy with the noose is black?

Can you imagine? What were these kids thinking? Tonight, the wrestlers have been banned from a tournament this weekend. Our Josh Einiger has the story, and reaction, at 11.

Also at 11, and also in New Jersey, a puzzling story involving the Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. While the church is closing Catholic schools it is spending big bucks to expand the weekend home of the archbishop of the Newark archdiocese John Myers. The 4,500-square-foot home on a wooded, 8.5-acre plot in the hamlet of Pittstown, is getting an extreme and expensive makeover, complete with a 3,000-square-foot addition, a new pool, an elevator, and three fireplaces. Say what? Our Jim Dolan has the story tonight.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast – what a warm-up!, plus Rob Powers is in Tampa for the Yankees spring training, with Laura Behnke in studio with the rest of the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.

And if you tire of the slippery slopes - why wait for your news? @abc7ny has your news at 11 p.m. with @billritter7 and @sadeabc
