Yonkers fire prompts rescue, displaces residents, kills cats

YONKERS

The flames broke out around 9 a.m. on the top floor of a four-story building on Warburton Avenue. The blaze apparently started when a mattress caught fire.

It quickly spread, and flames were shooting out the balcony of the well-involved fire by the time firefighters arrived.

A woman believed to be around 70 years old was removed from the fire apartment suffering from smoke inhalation and other injuries.

Her injuries were not considered life threatening.

There were also several cats in the apartment. Some made it out, but others died.

Several residents were displaced due to water and smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No firefighters were injured.
