Best Buys for your wallet in March

7 On Your Side has your guide to low-down deals and steals with a look at what to buy and what to skip this transition month.

Winter's still here and accompanying the snow is an avalanche of deals on winter apparel. Hats, coats, gloves, winter appliances and tools all take a downhill dive in March.

"All these retailers are trying to rid their inventory," explained Mark Locastro of dealnews.com.

But be careful of falling for the products made for spring.

"You may be tempted, but it's at peak demand and peak price," said Locastro. "Don't buy it."

Locastro added that research also shows huge savings in March on smartphones because of the new models just introduced at last month's Mobile World Congress.

"Because of that, the older phone previous generations will be discounted," he said.

Look for freebie phones with two-year contracts and gift card offers to sweeten your cellphone steals.

But Locastro warns against immediately pouncing on the 2014 models.

"Wait a couple days, a couple months, and the deals will get better - 20-30-50 percent off," he said.

If you are in the market for a gaming system, it would be a good time to zero in on that Xbox console. Sony's PlayStation 4 has been outselling the Xbox and coming down in price.

Microsoft recently discounted its system by $50 in the United Kingdom, adding up to more frequent and steeper deals here in the coming weeks.

Laptop prices are also really low this month of March madness. Current generation Haswell Core 5 and Core 7's are breaking deal records.

"The current generation Ivy Bridge Haswell is actually cheaper than the previous - $415," said Locastro.

With March being national frozen food month, it's also a good time to stock up in the freezer aisle. Reach for staples now to save on items your family enjoys.

While you're in the store, grab some chocolate.

"You can get 50 percent off brands like Godiva," said Locastro. "Who doesn't like chocolate all year long?"

Indulge your sweet tooth, but hold off on your seductive side for now.

Lingerie will be discounted in June and July, when Victoria's Secret holds their semiannual sale and other shops follow suit in SoHo.
