The initial call came in about 3:50 a.m. of a fire on the third floor of a five story building at 255 Canal Street near Lafayette Street.

The fire went to three alarms and forced the evacuation of the building as well as a nearby hotel.

Firefighters believe it started at the rear of a jewelry store and retail store on the ground floor of the building and went to the upper floors.

There were four minor injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Canal Street was closed down between Lafayette and Broadway.
