Orange and Rockland Utilities arrived on the scene at the Harbors of Haverstraw on Leeward Drive around 8:45 a.m., and officials say they are still working repairing the 2-inch plastic main that is leaking gas into the complex.
It was damaged by contractor working on the property. He was reportedly pulling up the catch basin when he damaged the gas line.
Crews at first tried to shut the valve closest to the damage, but were unable to because of the blowing gas and had to move further down the line. The gas was turned off just after 9:30 a.m., and repairs are underway.
The fire department evacuated the building, and no injuries were reported. Officials say the breezy conditions are helping disburse the gas.
