Two NJ fires apparently started by cigarettes

Bill Ritter's daily take on the news.

Yes I'm hardly unbiased when it comes to smoking. Having a mom die when she was just 61 from smoking-caused lung cancer is a pretty good reason to be biased.

Yes, I told my kids if they didn't even try cigarettes for their first 18 years, I'd give them a nice high school graduation present made of green. I'm not at all contrite about bribing them not to smoke ? not with a mom who didn't live long enough to become a grandmother.

So when we reported today that the elementary school in Edison, New Jersey that burned down, and the motel that burned in Pt. Pleasant Beach, also in New Jersey, and killed 4 people, were both started by discarded cigarettes.

The school janitor was allegedly smoking in his office and tossed the cigarette into his waste basket, and someone left a burning cigarette in a chair.

What in the world are these people thinking?

We'll have the latest on both fires, tonight at 11.

Also at 11, we're following the latest developments on the missing Malaysia plane. The prime minister of Malaysia today saying that new trajectory calculations by mathematicians in England put the plane someone where in the South Indian Ocean. The airline today texted family members of the passengers and crew ? something that drew criticism, even though the families said they wanted to be informed via text. What do you think? A cruel way to let families know? Or the fastest?

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg with a huge storm that will likely miss most of us ? or at least we're hoping it does ? and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.
