Coyote that attacked woman walking dog in Rockland County had rabies

ORANGEBURG, New York

52-year old Mary Lou Gardner told police that she was attacked by the 40 to 50 pound coyote just before 7 a.m. and suffered a puncture wound on her leg. The animal then went after her dog, Jasmine.

The coyote ran into a backyard after the woman was able to shield it off of her using her jacket. Neighbors also made noise to scary away the animal, which was shot and kliled by a police officer.

The Rockland County Health Department revealed the positive rabies test, and advised anyone who believes they may have come into contact with the coyote to contact their physician.

Additionally, if you own a pet that you feel could have come into contact with this animal, you should contact your veterinarian.

The woman was transported to Nyack Hospital with her injuries.
