The collision sent the bus careening into a tree.

The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were only two people on the bus at the time, and it took more than an hour to remove them from the vehicle. One passengers was being treated for minor injuries, while the bus driver had to be extricated using the jaws of life. He was brought out the side of the bus and taken away on a stretcher.

"According to witnesses it was driving excessively fast, lost control of the vehicle, and collided with the coach bus," said Inspector Kenneth Lack, of the Nassau County Police Department.

It appeared the bus hit the truck head on, and witnesses say the truck was speeding and swerved into oncoming traffic.

"According to witnesses the coach bus driver tried to move over as far as right to avoid the collision but he could not," Lack said.

It is unclear where the bus was heading at the time of the crash, and the identity of the truck's driver has not been released.

Roslyn Road was closed in both directions between IU Willets Road and Robbins Drive due to the accident, and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Nassau Police identified the pickup truck driver as 43 year old Facundo Ponce of Glen Head.
