N.J. woman arrested for driving kids into river

FLORENCE TOWNSHIP, N.J.

Police said Joann Smith, 49, of Florence Township, N.J., purposely drove her van into the Delaware River off West Front Street Tuesday night.

Her three children, ages 13, 14 and 15 were in the vehicle, but along with their mother, they survived.

According to investigators, Smith was driving a van on West Front with her children when she accelerated, drove onto a boat ramp and went into the water.

A man in the area was able to rescue Smith and her children. One of the teens suffered a cut to the leg.

Smith was evaluated and taken into custody. Her bail has been set at $600,000.

The incident remains under investigation.
