The fire broke out at 6 p.m. in an 11th floor apartment at 1175 Findlay Ave.
Battalion Chief Rob Lombardo said firefighters found the man unconscious behind his door from smoke inhalation. He also suffered burns from the fire, which started when a mattress caught fire.
The victim was pulled from the apartment and rushed to the burn unit at Jacobi Medical Center where he is in stable condition.
The fire was contained to the apartment. It is still under investigation.
