Review: Cool name, star lead can't save "Transcendence"

NEW YORK

Depp plays "Dr. Will Caster," who is on a mission to build a super-computer smarter than every human being ever born put together - a machine powerful enough to heal the sick and make people stronger than their wildest dreams.

Morgan Freeman acts as Caster's mentor and Rebecca Hall plays his wife and partner.

But not everyone buys into the idea of "artificial intelligence."

A terrorist group, led by Kate Mara's character is determined to halt their progress.

Depp's character gets hit half an hour into the movie. But before he dies, his team downloads his brain into a super computer thus creating one very smart machine.

Though the movie claims that it is evolution, it is actually more like devolution because the movie declines from there. Soon Depp rules the world – or at least the machine does from underneath the desert.

"Transcendence" is unquestionably one of the dumbest movies of the year. Don't be fooled by the cool visuals or his name above the title.

On the other hand, "Bears" from Disney Nature is easily enjoyable.

Made in Alaska, the film tells the story of "Sky" and her two cubs as they struggle to survive their first year in what can be a hostile environment.

The bears are remarkably cute and adorable even the most cynical would be charmed.

The movie is from "Disney Nature," owned by the same parent company as WABC-TV.
