5 kids charged in Central Park robberies, assault

NEW YORK

The incidents happened just after 5 a.m. at East 96th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Authorities say a 31-year-old male was approached by a group of suspects ranging in age from 12 to 16. They allegedly demanded money from him and punched him.

He was not seriously injured, and nothing was taken.

The suspects then headed into the park near the reservoir, according to police, where they encountered two female joggers, ages 46 and 48. Investigators say one woman had her iPhone stolen and the other an iPod.

They were not assaulted.

Police took three of the suspects into custody and were interviewing them at the Central Park Precinct when two other males entered and asked about the teens who were arrested. They were also taken into custody and questioned.

Police say 16-year-old Angel Munoz, of the Bronx, is charged with two counts of robbery. All the other suspects are charged as minors.
