The victim was identified as Dominic Bottiglieri, of Coram.
Investigators say he was riding in a car with his stepson, 57-year-old Rafael Ortiz, when Ortiz veered off the road and hit a pole in Melville around 7:30 p.m.
No charges have yet been filed.
Ortiz is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check, and the investigation is continuing.
