Proceeds from The Big Swim support Asphalt Green's FIT KIDS FIT CITY campaign, which will transform the lives of 30,000 New York City kids this year through sports and fitness, including its nationally-recognized learn-to-swim program, Waterproofing. Since 1994, Waterproofing has combatted childhood drowning and obesity by teaching more than 30,000 New York City children how to swim. Many of The Big Swim participants will be Waterproofing students from low-income communities in Harlem, the South Bronx and Brooklyn.
As part of The Big Swim, Asphalt Green will host a family-friendly benefit luncheon. Guests will enjoy an exclusive opportunity to take pictures with and get autographs from the Olympians. They will also have VIP seating for the special exhibition featuring Olympians, elite athletes, and synchronized swimmers and divers.
The 2014 Big Swim Honorary Committee includes U.S. Senators Kristen E. Gillibrand and Charles Schumer, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Council Members Margaret Chin and Ben Kallos, State Senators Jose Serrano, Daniel L. Squadron, and Liz Kreuger, and Assemblyman Micah Kellner.
