Citizenship NOW!, the largest program of its kind in the nation, was co-launched by the Daily News and CUNY in April 2004 to address the lack of access to free and confidential immigration information for the people who need it most. This year's weeklong hotline began operating on Monday, April 28th, and will run through Friday, May 2nd. It's available between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., with more than 400 trained volunteers available by telephone over the course of the week. Calls will be answered in English and Spanish, as well as numerous other languages, including; Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Korean, Italian, Haitian Creole, Bengali, Polish, French, Yiddish, and Arabic.
The Citizenship NOW! hotline is led by attorney Allan Wernick who is also a professor of Law at Baruch College and writes the twice-weekly "Immigration" column for the Daily News. Additionally, Wernick writes the nationally syndicated column, "Immigration and Citizenship" and is the director of the CUNY Citizenship Now! project.
