Babysitter charged in death of 4-year-old in Newark

NEWARK

Police were called to the home on North Munn Street on a report of a non-responsive child just before 11 a.m. Wednesday. The child, Naira Bennett, was transported to University Hospital where she died at 7:11 p.m.

The babysitter, 38-year-old Sakita Covington, was arrested and charged Thursday. She is being held on $500,000 bail.

Authorities say Bennett and three other very young children were apparently left unattended in a Bradley Court apartment.

The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy. The investigation is active and ongoing.

It appeared the mother of at least two of the kids went to work and left all in the hands of the sitter.

Covington had apparently left the apartment, and the child fell off a bed. Witnesses say the child was foaming at the mouth when they found her, and half of her body was hanging off the side of the bed.

The mother of the children has not been charged.

The other children were unharmed.
