New livery cab service just for women
Tim Fleischer reports on 'She Rides', a service where women are the drivers, and passengers.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Hail a cab and chances are the driver will be male, until now.

Starting Monday, a new livery service called "SheRides" begins with 50 female TLC-licensed drivers.

Unlike, a yellow cab hail, "SheRides" is new mobile app-based livery offering what officials call a "women for women" service.

Some women cab riders Eyewitness News spoke to, and even some men, believe they might even feel safer with a female driver.

But according to the TLC, woman livery and taxi drivers are greatly outnumbered by men.

There are 2,952 women driving livery, green, and luxury cars of the nearly 60,000 licensed, and only 574 drive yellow cabs out nearly 52,000 licensed drivers.

Company officials believe the new venture will not only fill a void in opportunities for women behind the wheel, but also in the passenger seat.
