MOUNT SINAI (WABC) -- A ninth-grade student at a high school on Long Island is under arrest, accused of making threats to shoot and blow up the school.

The 15-year-old male student, who attends Mount Sinai High School, reportedly utilized an anonymous social media app called Yik Yak to make the threats, posting there would be a shooting at the school and that he was going to blow it up on Tuesday.

Parents and students read the postings on the app and notified school authorities, who in turn contacted police.

Detectives investigated and located the student, who was arrested and charged with making a terrorist threat.

The student will appear at family court.

Suffolk County Police Department school resource officers are at the school as a precaution.
