NEW YORK (WABC) -- It's the go-to event for fans of superheroes, zombies, and everything in between.

They're all expected to flood the Javits Center for this weekend's New York Comic Con.

On Thursday there was a steady stream of characters, superheroes of every description and all ages. What they have in common is that they are kindred spirits.

So many characters so much of the world loves are at Comic Con, but the event also has an 'only in New York' flair.

"We're used to things that are outta the norm on a regular basis so this is nothing new and even if you're just coming to Comic Con for the 1st time, nothing here will surprise you," said visitor Robert Mejia.

Fans compete with each other to get a first look at the coming attractions, but there is one in particular that has everyone talking here.

"Star Wars: The force awakens oooh hoooo," said Danielle Echevarria. "Why are you so anxious to see it?", we asked. "I'm a Star Wars fan since the 70's. I have all the books, the movies. I'm in it."

The gap between fan and performer is indeed very narrow here.

Before Comic Con comes to a close on Sunday, 160,000 fans are expected to stroll through and though some may call 'em geeks, here that's a badge of honor.

"Yeah, it's expressing whatever you want to express and being a little outrageous and everything else is totally OK with it," said visitor Diana Thompson.

And it's never too early to get with it, says Will Vasquez from the Bronx, who brought his daughter, toddler Lilith.

"Do you like Comic Con?", we asked. "Yes", she said.

She may not know it yet, but many here started small.

"I loved cartoon from when I was very little, and you are never too old, and there's always someone here who loves the same things you do, and you just feel welcome," said one visitor.

Welcome in so many ways in so many worlds, without ever leaving the confines of the Javits Center.
