NEW YORK (WABC) -- There's nothing quite like the electricity generated by a million people celebrating at the same time in the same place, so say the hosts of ABC's New Year's Rockin' Eve. Like many of us, Ryan Seacrest and Jenny McCarthy grew up watching the show in Times Square
"I was probably about 9 years old, and my Mom let me stay-up late, and I remember watching it and thinking, 'Oh my gosh! New York City looks amazing, and I wonder if I'd go up there someday' and the fact I'm co-hosting kind of blows my mind," Jenny McCarthy said.
Jenny watched from Chicago, Illinois and Ryan from Dunwoodie, Georgia.
The host was Dick Clark.
"One of the things that Dick wanted to create was this environment and atmosphere that if you're here, you're celebrating and if you aren't here, you're also celebrating with us and everybody is included, so that's what's cool about this night," Ryan Seacrest said.
Seacrest shared the night with the man who taught New Year's Eve how to rock before his death a couple of years ago.
"What did the late Dick Clark tell you was the secret to doing this show well?" Sandy Kenyon asked.
"Shut up! He said just be quiet at midnight and let the pictures tell the story," Seacrest said.
If the trick is to know when to be quiet, it also helps to know how to stay warm.
"How cold does it get?" Kenyon asked.
"Well it's freezing. How's that for you? You can't feel your mouth move after a while, but it's worth it every year isn't it?" McCarthy said.
"You kind of forget about all of that when you're in the moment, right? And then afterwards you realize how cold and how long you were out there freezing," Seacrest said.
As in past years, the action will not be confined to Times Square. Sir Elton John will appear from Brooklyn's Barclay's Center and he's part of a full musical line-up that includes Taylor Swift and Iggy Azalea.
"38 performances. We've, I've never hosted a show with that many in one night so it's the biggest show that I've ever done and we're going to have in LA. We're going to have it West Coast. We're going to have it Nashville. We've got it covered!" Seacrest said.
"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" kicks off at 8 p.m. right here on Channel 7!
