Long Island woman arrested on DWI charges with 5 kids in car

A Long Island woman was arrested on DWI charges with 5 young children in the car.

Elba Ayala, 43, of Shirley is accused of running through a Suffolk County sobriety checkpoint on the William Floyd Parkway Sunday night.

Officers were able to pull over Ayala's Nissan Altima and charged her with DWI, and DWI with a child passenger 15 years or younger (Leandra's Law) and 5 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a child.

Another woman and the 5 children, ages 7 months to 8-years-old were also in the vehicle.

The Sobriety Checkpoint operation was conducted for the prevention of injuries and fatalities associated with driving while intoxicated, particularly during the July 4th Holiday weekend. A total of 1,077 vehicles went through the checkpoint.
