STATEN ISLAND (WABC) -- A sick child is recovering in a Staten Island hospital, after first responders took him off a cruise ship due to an asthma attack.

Police say medical staff on the "Norwegian Gem" cruise ship called for help when a 10-year old boy suffered an asthma attack on board Saturday.

Police and fire marine units went out to the ship, and removed the boy and his father.

The child had been stabilized on the ship and was taken to Richmond University Medical Center on Staten Island for treatment.

The ship is a seven day cruise to the Eastern Caribbean to and from New York that was leaving Saturday, and due back May 24th.
