Hospital holds wedding so mother with leukemia can see son wed

STONY BROOK, Long Island (WABC) -- A Long Island mother got the chance to see her youngest son get married, despite her Leukemia diagnosis thanks to a local hospital.

Catherine Holm, 58, of North Babylon wanted to see her 24-year-old son Mark marry his fiancee Joanna.

He is set to tie the knot in Puerto Rico on April 23rd, but traveling would be impossible for Catherine right now as she is waiting for a bone marrow transplant.

She just learned last month that she is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

The kind-hearted nurses at Stony Brook University Hospital mentioned to Catherine that they should have the wedding in the hospital chapel so she could witness the ceremony.

The bride and groom jumped at the opportunity and the planning began with the whole family.

After they exchanged vows in the ceremony, the hospital hosted a reception for the entire family to celebrate with Catherine and the newlyweds in the Market Place Cafe.

As happy as the family is, they still want Catherine to get her much needed bone marrow match so the donation to occur and put her on the path to recovery.

Stony Brook University Hospital would like to raise awareness and increase registered donors at an event on May 1st.
