NEW YORK (WABC) -- There was an important event Tuesday night in Manhattan to raise awareness for cancers linked to the BRCA gene.

The event "Unzip Your Genes" benefited the Basser Research Center founded by Mindy and Jon Gray.

"Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts welcomed the crowd and helped kick off the event.

Tuesday night, $8 million was raised for the cause.

Eyewitness News Reporter Stacey Sager, a breast and ovarian cancer survivor, helped plan the benefit.

Among the speakers was fellow survivor and songwriter Kara DioGuardi who says Stacey's BRCA story inspired her to get tested and in turn saved her life.
