Marcus Solis has the latest on the shooting of an officer in Newark.

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Authorities say a Newark police officer suffered minor injuries after being shot by a suspect during the execution of a search warrant Saturday morning.

Shortly after 6 a.m., members of the Newark Police Department and the Emergency Service's SWAT team were executing a search warrant in a basement apartment on Goodwin Avenue when the suspect fired a gun from inside of the apartment, according to police.

A member of the SWAT team was struck in his bulletproof vest.

The officer was rushed to University Hospital where the 15-year veteran was treated for a bruise.

A 2-year-old child was in the apartment at the time.

The suspect, 22-year-old James Dennard, was immediately arrested with his weapon recovered.

He is facing multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a weapon.

Police recovered a 9MM handgun, marijuana scale and packaging materials from the residence.
