Lucy Yang has the story.

MOUNT VERNON, New York (WABC) -- A pleasant spring afternoon in Mount Vernon turned violent Monday, when shots rang out and blood was spilled.

Eyewitness Everett Shaw said he ducked and was not injured. But 20-year-old Donovan McQueen was not as fortunate.

Police report he was shot numerous times in the thigh and hip. He was rushed to a local hospital in stable condition.

The wild shooting happened on the 100 block of S. 4th St. around 3:40 p.m. The sidewalks were busy then. The curbs were full of parked cars.

One bullet sliced into the hood of a Nissan. Another sailed into the driver side windshield of a FedEx truck. Amazingly the driver was not struck.

One merchant told Eyewitness News that the FedEx driver parks there every day around 4 so the workers can take a break.

FedEx released a statement saying, "We are aware of the incident in Mount Vernon and are cooperating with authorities as they investigate."

As for the victim, McQueen, one store owner said he came in just the other day to buy some T-shirts and is a polite young man.

Eyewitnesses say the gunman walked straight to McQueen and began shooting at him uttering this chilling warning: "I could've killed, but I didn't."

So far, there are no arrests.
