The amateur-built Auriga aircraft came down in a residential area near 270 Sunny Meade Road in Hillsborough, shortly after 10 a.m.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation reports that the plane crashed as it approached Runway 7 at Central Jersey Regional Airport.

Officials have identified the pilot as 73-year-old Victor Holmlund of Hillsborough, the registered owner of the plane.

A spokesperson at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital says Holmlund is listed in fair condition. The hospital would not discuss the extent of his injuries.

The pilot is the President of a local aviation club, EAA Chapter 176 in Trenton.
