Uber driver facing charges of slamming woman's service dog into the ground

NEW YORK (WABC) -- An Uber driver is facing charges after allegedly attacking a passenger's service dog.

The woman claims the driver, 23-year-old Muhammad Qayyum, refused to give her and her dog a ride on January 21st in Midtown.

After the passenger informed him the animal is her service dog, she says the driver grabbed the leash and slammed the dog to the ground.

The dog suffered a dislocated hip and leg injury that required surgery.

The driver claims he was the one who was attacked, and says the woman made racist remarks and punched him in the face multiple times. He says she refused to show documentation for her dog.

According to Uber, all Uber driver-partners are required to accommodate service animals. Refusal to do so may result in deactivation.

Qayyum faces a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals and one count of harming a service animal.
