7 On Your Side: Best buys of February
Nina Pineda has February's best buys

NEW YORK, NY (WABC) -- February is a big month for super sales, between the Super Bowl, Presidents' Day and shopping for your sweetie for Valentine's Day, but you've got know what to skip and where to splurge.

If you have a nice dinner in mind for Valentine's Day, look for deals on Groupon and other social sharing sites first, although it may not be so romantic to bust out a coupon. Still, maybe he or she will think you are smart to save money. And the month isn't shy on sales.

Ben Glaser at DealNews.com says focus in on Presidents' Day sales to save 20 to 70 percent.

Valentine's Day Items:

You'll be good as gold to score savings on jewelry for your loved one. Look for markdowns on bling, but not so much on other Valentine's Day gifts like perfume or chocolate. You won't get a discount on candy until February 15.

Coats:

All coats are priced to get them out the door, and Glaser Ben says most are 50 percent off already because the weather has been so mild.

Bedding and mattresses:

Don't sleep through these deals, because you won't see them again for a while. This is the best time to buy until the spring, and you'll see up to 60 percent off at Sears and US Mattress.

Tools:

And this month, for some reason, Dealnews found three times more deals on tools.

Nothing "super" about flat screens:

Flat-screen televisions will be advertised because of the Super Bowl, but you won't be getting as good a deal as Black Friday or the holidays.

And if you're buying food for the Super Bowl, troubled chain Chipotle wants your business back.

"Managers have been given a lot of leeway to offer free food," Glaser said. "They have a Super Bowl promotion. The first 1,500 people to order 20 or more burritos for catering will get $50 off."

Just make sure your guests are OK with it first. But you may want to stick to cooking at home, as all kinds of kitchen gadgets are on sale this month, including Bullets, blenders and toasters.

"I wouldn't recommend it as a Valentine's Day gift, unless your significant other has specifically asked for a toaster," Glaser said.

So buy the toaster, but maybe put some jewelry or a gift certificate inside it.

Another thing you might want to wait on this month are Samsung smartphones. The new models for Android and Windows based smartphones debut in the spring.
