Sandra Bookman has the latest on Bandit, a puppy thrown from a moving car in Uniondale.

A puppy was thrown out of a moving car Saturday night on Long Island and officials are looking for the driver.

It's difficult to understand why anyone would want to harm the adorable puppy, nicknamed Bandit by those who rescued her after she was thrown from the car.

"We're fed up, as all animal people are with the total callousness and disregard for life that people show," said Nassau County SPCA Detective Bob Sowers.

Animal authorities said a neighbor saw the 5-month-old animal fly from the car on Bedford Avenue in Uniondale on a residential street around 7:45 p.m. They got in touch with ASPCA authorities.

"My sister called me right away," said neighbor Jeanartta Prysock, who says her sister saw the puppy tossed from a passing dark sedan.

The frightened animal then huddled on a neighbor's stoop. "I gave her some food but it wasn't very friendly because it was scared," said Prysock.

The next day, Detective Bob Sowers successfully lured the wary pup onto a leash and took her to a local vet to be checked out.

"She is very, very fearful. She's very apprehensive," said Massapequa Pet Vet Dr. Ned Horowitz. "When people approach her, she kind of cowers, so she did have some kind of rough puppyhood."

Bandit was uninjured in the incident, but animal rescue officials said the puppy does show some signs of having been abused.

A $5,000 reward is being offered by the Nassau County SPCA for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Authorities said the suspect was in a dark, sedan, with tinted glass windows.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 516-THE-SPCA (843-7722).

"Somebody knows who owns this pup. somebody knows who the owner is and hopefully they're gonna call us and we can get justice for the dog," said Sowers.
