GLEN HEAD, Long Island (WABC) -- Nassau County police are investigating after a newborn girl was found unresponsive Thursday in the backyard of a home in Glen Head, Long Island.

The child, believe to have been a full-term newborn, was found in a bag on the home's back deck, according to police.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to Det. Captain John Azzata of the Nassau County homicide squad, police and fire rescue responded to a 911 call at the home at 8:20 a.m.

On arrival, they found a 20-year-old young woman with severe bleeding. She was rushed to the hospital where doctors determined that she was bleeding from childbirth.

Officers returned to the home and found the child. Police would not say whether the child was alive, only to say that she was unresponsive on arrival.

They are now investigating to determine whether the child was stillborn or delivered alive.

An autopsy will be conducted Thursday night. All parties involved are said to be cooperating in the case.
