Sandy Kenyon reviews 'Barbershop: The Next Cut,' 'Criminal'

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Theatergoers are heading back to the barbershop, as the star-studded franchise returns with its latest installment.

But does "Barbershop: The Next Cut" live up to its name?

Most of the gang is back on familiar turf in Chicago, while newcomers like Nikki Minaj are welcome additions from the world of music. The film is like a mix tape of different styles and stylists, but it works in the end.

The world has changed since the first "Barbershop" opened in 2002, and the new movie reflects that. It is just one reason it ends up being so enjoyable.

With weaves part of the next wave, the place run by Ice Cube's character is no longer a male sanctuary. And as such, the lines are drawn for a battle of the sexes.

The struggle within stays mostly lighthearted, the battle outside is not.

Characters played by Cedric the Entertainer, Anthony Anderson, Eve and Common each face challenges in their own separate ways until a customer is killed and the hair stylists unite to get the gangs to stop fighting.

And the ceasefire holds, as the group offers free cuts and styling.

It may not be their very best work, but "Barbershop: The Next Cut" walks the line between comedy and drama quite well.

Elsewhere in theaters this weekend, Kevin Costner continues to squander his considerable talent as a "Criminal" who has another man's brain downloaded into his head as a way of trying to stop terrorists.

There is something so sad in seeing a major movie star who is also a capable actor working in such a meaningless project.

The arrival of "Criminal" has been greeted with yawns and a shower of single star reviews, so don't waste your time or your money.
