14-year-old student stabbed on way to New Rochelle middle school, 13-year-old charged

NEW ROCHELLE, New York (WABC) -- A 14-year-old student was stabbed on the way to school in New Rochelle Wednesday morning, and a 13-year-old has been charged in connection with the stabbing.

Police say the suspect has been charged as a juvenile delinquent with second-degree assault.

He was released to the custody of his mother and is due to appear in Family Court later this week.

The knife used in the assault has not been located, police say.

Isaac E. Young Middle School was on lockdown because of the attack, a City School District of New Rochelle spokesperson confirmed.

The student was stabbed in the torso while on his way to Young, said New Rochelle Deputy Police Commissioner Joseph Schaller, then taken to Jacobi Hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the victim walked up to a security officer at the school after the incident and told him what happened.

A 13-year-old student continued into the school building where he was taken into custody.

The stabbing appears to be the result of a long-running dispute between the two eighth-graders and may have been the continuation of an altercation Tuesday.

The investigation is ongoing.
