Exclusive: Pregnant couple speaks out about hit-and-run church van crash in Queens

JAMAICA, Queens (WABC) -- Two of the people inside a church van involved in a frightening crash, the pastor and his pregnant wife, spoke exclusively to Eyewitness News.

The driver that hit them with a stolen car took off and is still on the run.

"I thank Jesus that we are alive I think him because without him we wouldn't be here," said Daniel Evans, a youth pastor.

Daniel and his pregnant wife Shenae insist their faith is the reason they and four others survived a horrific accident in Jamaica, Queens, last Friday night.

Security camera video shows the moment a stolen rental car broadsided the church van Daniel was driving and flipping it.

"I heard him screaming, 'Baby are you OK, baby are you OK?' And then I realized I was actually flipped upside down and then I started to panic," Shenae said.

Neighbors who heard the impact of the crash rushed to help, kicking out windows and pulling those inside the van to safety even before emergency crews arrived.

The couple was understandably concerned about their unborn child.

"I remember lying there crying out praying and I remember feeling her kick and that's when I know she's good, she's good," Shenae said.

In fact everyone in the van including two young children walked away with only minor injuries.

Seatbelts and child safety seats were likely one of the reasons, but Daniel and Shenae, who were ferrying young church members home from a night of Bible study and games at the Hope NYC church at the time of the crash, say divine intervention is the real reason.

"All of us were breathing, all of us were conscious, all of us were alive, and I thank God for that, I thank God for that," Daniel said.
